Adventures 2 Ranta Bout

Privacy and posting

Last updated

This is our family's off-road and overlanding site. This page says what the site keeps about you (nothing if you only read, a little more if you post), which outside services see your visit, and what it means to post something here.

What we keep

Comments. When you post a comment, we keep the name you type (it's optional), your comment, the page it's on and when you posted it. We also keep two things about where it came from, which only we can see: roughly where you were (city, region and country, as Cloudflare works them out from your network address), and a scrambled stand-in for that address. The stand-in is made with a secret key, so the same address always gives the same stand-in, but it can't be turned back into the address. It lets us spot someone posting over and over, and turn them away. We never keep the address itself, and there's no email and no account.

Photos. If you add a photo to a comment, your browser shrinks it before sending it, and the copy shown on the site has all of its hidden details removed: no time, no camera, no location. Before that, we read and privately keep what the photo says about itself: when it was taken, the make and model of the camera or phone, and the GPS spot (and height) where it was taken, if the photo has them. Only we can see these. Many phones leave the location out when you pick a photo in a browser; if you don't want us to have it, remove the photo's location before you pick it, or post without the photo.

Page views. We count how many times each page is opened, one tally per page per day. Nothing about you goes with the count: no cookies, no IP address, no browser details. To stop anyone from flooding the counter, our server holds the network address a visit came from in memory for up to ten minutes. It's never written down.

In your own browser. Your browser remembers a few small things so the site works smoothly: the name you last typed in a comment box, so you don't have to type it again; which pages it has already counted in this tab; and the banner at the top of the page. They stay on your device, and clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.

We don't sell or share anything we keep. There are no ads, and the site itself sets no cookies for visitors.

What other services see

Like any website, ours runs on other companies' services. To deliver a page, they see your IP address and basic browser details, under their own privacy policies:

  • Vercel hosts the site. Cloudflare runs its domain and network, stores our photos and the ones you post, and tells our server roughly where a visit comes from.
  • Google Fonts: the Journal, the Trail Map, the trail logs and the posts load their fonts from Google.
  • YouTube: the home page shows video thumbnails from YouTube. A video loads only when you tap it, through YouTube's privacy-enhanced player, and from then on YouTube's own policy applies.
  • The Trail Map gets its map from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Map and its map code from unpkg.
  • Links to other sites (Trails Offroad, onX, trail guides) take you there, under their own policies. Our Trails Offroad link is an ambassador link.

Posting a comment or a photo

Anyone can post, no account needed. When you post a comment or a photo:

  • It's public. It shows on the page right away, with the name you typed.
  • You let us use it. You give Adventures 2 Ranta Bout permission to show it on this site, and to share, quote or feature it on our channels, like YouTube and social media, along with the name you typed, without paying you. You still own what you post.
  • It has to be yours to share. Post only what you made or have the right to share, and no photos of people who haven't agreed to be in them.
  • Keep it kind. No links, nothing hateful, explicit or illegal, and nothing that's someone else's private information. We can take down anything, at any time, for any reason, and hold back what comes from someone who keeps posting what we take down.

Taking something down

Want something you posted removed, or have a question about this page? Email us at [email protected] with the page and about when you posted, and we'll take it down (and delete a photo for good). There are no accounts, so we can't check who posted what. We'd rather remove too much than too little.

Kids

This site isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly keep anything from them. If a child posted something, email us and we'll remove it.

Changes

When what the site keeps changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
