Trail review

From our run, the track, and the published guides

The trail

Red Cone climbs from Hall Valley through treeline to its 12,800 ft summit, then drops off the far side on a steep, one-way descent to Webster Pass on the Continental Divide. Trails Offroad gives it 4.9 stars from 232 reviews and calls it “one of the most iconic trails in central Colorado”; FunTreks rates it difficult and calls the descent “incredibly steep.” From the pass, the Webster Pass road drops down the west side to a creek crossing at its base and runs north down the valley to Montezuma. Radical Hill leaves the road at the base and climbs west over rock obstacles and up narrow switchbacks on Teller Mountain.

Our run

Sunday, August 23, back on Red Cone two months after our June run. This time, from the top of Webster Pass we went down the west side, up Radical Hill over the first rock obstacle, and back out to air up. The track tops Red Cone at 12,786 ft, and the steepest pitch of the day, 36% over 100 m, comes near the bottom of the descent to Webster Pass. On Radical Hill, the turnaround past the first rock obstacle sits at 11,834 ft, 0.7 mi up from the base. From there we came back down and drove 4.7 mi out the Webster Pass road, through Montezuma, to the end of the recording at 10,027 ft.

Good to know

  • Red Cone is one-way: up from Hall Valley, down to Webster Pass. FunTreks warns not to start down if both sides of Webster Pass are blocked by snow: “You’ll be boxed in with no place to go.”
  • Trails Offroad rates the Webster Pass road from Montezuma beginner, with 4.7 stars, and lists a seasonal creek crossing at the base, where Radical Hill begins.
  • FunTreks rates Radical Hill difficult, “very tippy, narrow and steep,” and its reviewers warn against running it wet.
  • Trails Offroad says the historic cabin on Radical Hill is worth a look before the climb.
