Trail review

From our run, the track, and the published guides

The trail

From Rollinsville, the Rollins Pass road runs west to the old town site of Tolland, where Mammoth Gulch turns south and climbs to the north end of Kingston Peak. Kingston Peak goes above timberline to about 12,030 ft and down the other side toward St. Mary’s. Trails Offroad rates it beginner, with 4.8 stars from 208 reviews, and says “the real beauty and focal point are the amazing views of James Peak.” FunTreks rates it difficult for steep, rocky sections and a shelf road that may intimidate some drivers.

Our run

Saturday, September 5, a week before the San Juans trip. From Rollinsville at 9:31 AM, we reached Tolland ten minutes later and the top of Mammoth Gulch at 10:20, where the Kingston Peak junction sits at 10,492 ft. The climb from the junction to the 12,033 ft high point took just under an hour, 21 minutes of it stopped, and the steepest pitch of the day, 25%, comes just below the top. Down the south side, we reached St. Mary’s at 12:22. Almost an hour of the day was stopped time, the longest a 14-minute stop at 11:02 on the way up. We also played around on Yankee Hill on the St. Mary’s side that day; that part isn’t in this recording.

Good to know

  • The season is short: Trails Offroad lists July 15 to October 30, and FunTreks notes a gate on the south side that usually opens around July 15.
  • FunTreks recommends at least 33-inch tires and low range. Sucia runs 35s.
  • Mammoth Gulch is rated beginner on Trails Offroad and is open year-round; it is the way in to the north end of Kingston Peak.
